What is a pyeong?
The pyeong (평) is a traditional Korean unit of floor area, still used in everyday conversation about apartments. One pyeong is a square 6 ja on each side, which works out to exactly 400/121 m², or about 3.3058 m² (35.58 ft²). Japan and Taiwan use the same unit under the name tsubo (坪).
Korean listings are officially written in square meters, but people often describe an apartment as "a 34-pyeong" (34평형). That figure usually refers to the supply area — the private floor area plus a share of hallways and stairs — so it is larger than the private area converted on its own. A typical 84 m² private-area apartment is about 25.4 pyeong by itself but is often called a 33- to 35-pyeong unit.
